There are various types of expansion joints used in fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) applications. Tied universals, hinged, gimbaled and pressure-balanced expansion joints are some of the most common designs. All of these fall into one of three major categories: cold wall (lined), hot wall (lined), and unlined FCCU expansion joints. Both cold wall and hot wall FCCU expansion joints are refractory lined to withstand the abrasion from the catalyst. Unlined expansion joints typically do not transport catalyst in the media, although the temperatures may still be extremely high. Unlined joints are used for inlet air, outlet air and for transferring gases from the reactor.
